Depart on your international overnight flight.

Day 2 April 25 – Arrive in Edinburgh

Your flight will arrive in Edinburgh this morning, and your guide will greet you at the airport and escort you to your bus for a panoramic tour of the city. Walk the halls of the John Knox House, a historic home in Edinburgh, Scotland, reputed to have been owned and lived in by Protestant Reformer, John Knox during the 16th century. Check into the hotel for your overnight stay. (D)

Day 3 April 26 – Edinburgh

Today, enjoy a walking tour of the city center. Attend a church service this morning at St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh and enjoy a guided tour afterward. Then, head to Edinburgh Castle, where James VI, who authorized the King James Bible, was born. Afterward, walk the ‘Royal Mile’, which stretches between Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace. Dr. Sinclair Ferguson will be preaching and leading this evening’s worship service. Enjoy time on your own in the city. (B, D)

Day 4 April 27 – St. Andrews

This morning, you’ll walk the grounds of the Ruins of St. Andrew’s Cathedral. They stand as a testament to the results of the conflict between Catholics and Reformers like John Knox. Once the Church of Scotland took hold of the nation, the church fell into disrepair through lack of use. St. Andrews Castle was never officially a residence of nobility but served as the residence of the catholic bishops of St. Andrews. The local Museum provides insight into the people of the city and their rich history. The Reformation played out against this backdrop as well, providing martyrdom for Reformers and the last bishop. The University of St. Andrews dates back to 1411 and carries a rich Reformation heritage as well. Walk a portion of the Old Course in the place where golf was born. Return to Edinburgh. (B, D)

Day 5 April 28 – Lindisfarne

Today, you’ll journey south to the Scotland and England border – stop for a photo. Continue to the ruins of Lindisfarne – the Holy Isle. Once an active abbey that was responsible for the Christianization of northern England, the monastery fell on hard times through Viking raids and the Reformation efforts of Henry VIII. The tides dictate your time on the island. Overnight in the area. (B, D)

Day 6 April 29 – Whitby and York

This morning, travel to Whitby on the northern coast. Here, St. Hilda founded an abbey in 657 AD. Walk the cliff-top ruins of the abbey and stop at the visitor’s center to see archaeological finds from the various abbeys and locals in the area. Finish the day with a tour of the center of York. With its ancient walls and history dating back 2000 years, you will see York Minster, the second largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe, and walk through the Shambles, the famous medieval street of York. Overnight in York. (B, D)

Day 7 April 30 – Boston to Cambridge

This morning, you’ll travel to Boston, home to St. Boltoph’s Church, built in 1319. John Foxe was born here when this was a vibrant coastal city. You’ll visit the Guildhall, where Puritan leaders were held in 1607 for trying to depart for Holland seeking freedom of worship, for dissenting from the Church of England. Continue to Ely Cathedral. The present structure was begun in the late 11th century during the reign of William the Conqueror and serves the present community as the “ship of the Fens,” towering above the surrounding flatlands. Check into your Cambridge hotel. (B, D)

Day 8 May 1 – Cambridge

Spend the day exploring Cambridge. Wander through the Cambridge University Botanical Gardens. After a walking tour of the city center, visit Kings College, which began in 1446 and was run by King Henry VI. Finish the day in London. (B, D)

Day 9 May 2 – Day trip to Oxford

This morning, you will travel to Oxford. Start with a walking tour of Magdalen (pronounced “Maudlin”) College, where C. S. Lewis was a fellow for most of his academic career. Stop at University College, the oldest college in Oxford (1249). Stop at Exeter College and Christ Church College and visit the dining hall where John Wesley and other alumni are honored on the walls. Walk through the University Church of St. Mary the Virgin. Here, the Oxford martyrs were tried for heresy. See the Sheldonian Theater, where scholars have graduated or been granted honorary degrees since 1669. Next door is the Bodleian Library, the main research library for Oxford with 12 million items. Spend the afternoon in the Ashmolean Museum, the world’s first university museum. Return to London. (B, D)
