Day 3 March 23 – Trekking Day
Begin this day with a walking tour of Caesarea Maritima, the port of entry to the country during the Roman period. After lunch, return to Nazareth and visit Mount Precipice, Mary’s Well, the Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, St. Joseph’s Workshop, the First Century Synagogue, and the Basilica of the Annunciation. Return to your hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 4 March 24 – Trekking Day (Nazareth to Zippori 7.8 km)
After breakfast, your hike of the Jesus Trail begins. Walk through Nazareth’s Old City and climb to the crest of the Nabi Sa’in Ridge. Descend the rolling hills to Sepphoris, the cosmopolitan capital of Galilee in Jesus’s day. Enjoy a thorough tour of the archaeological remains of the city. Tradition suggests this site was the birthplace of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Time permitting, we will bus to Cana of Galilee and visit the church built to remember the first miracle of Jesus - turning water to wine. Return to your hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 5 March 25 – Trekking Day (Lavi to Nebi Shu’eib 6.1 km)
This second day of the Jesus Trail hike begins at the modern site of Kibbutz Lavi. From Lavi, walk across expansive fields to the Horns of Hattin, a volcanic structure best known as the site where Saladin defeated the Crusaders in the battle of 1187. Descend the slopes of this ancient volcanic cone to Nebi Shu’eib, a Druze shrine to Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses. Explore the shrine before continuing by bus to Moshav Arbel. From there, we will make our way on foot to a Byzantine-era synagogue. Finally, climb one last slope to the summit of Mount Arbel for a spectacular afternoon view.
Day 6 March 26 –Trekking Day (Moshav Arbel to Wadi Hamam 3.6 km / Tabgha to Capernaum 2.3 km)
Weather permitting, we begin this third day of trekking by descending into the Wadi Hamam, otherwise known as the Valley of the Doves. Appreciate the austere cliffs of this spectacular gorge, the scene of fighting between Herod the Great at the Jewish zealots who resisted his power. Jesus would have likely walked this path, a “valley of the shadow of death.” Bus hop to Magdala, the Mount of Beatitudes, and Tabgha, before completeing the final segment of the Jesus Trail to Capernaum. Celebrate and visit the ruins there. Transfer to Jerusalem late today and check into your hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 7 March 27 – Monday Jordan Valley
This morning, travel through the Judean Wilderness to Qasr el-Yahud, a site associated with the Baptism of Jesus. Walk the Wadi Qelt to the Monastery of St. George, and then walk down to Jericho. Travel up the Judean Ridge by bus to visit Bethlehem’s Shepherds’ Field Church and the Church of the Nativity. Return to your hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 8 March 28 – Jerusalem
Begin the day atop the Mount of Olives. Walk the Palm Sunday Road to the Garden of Gethsemane. Walk through the Kidron Valley to the City of David Excavations. Those not claustrophobic can walk Hezekiah’s Tunnel. Continue past the Gihon Spring to the Pool of Siloam, and then walk a portion of the Pilgrim’s path toward the Temple Mount. Finish the day at the Western Wall. Return to your hotel for dinner and overnight.
