Daily Itinerary

Day 1 Depart USA

Depart on your international overnight flight.

Day 2 Flight to Zurich

Arrive in Zurich, where our representative will escort you for your transfer to your hotel in Zurich for dinner and overnight.

Day 3 Zurich (Walking Tour)

Zurich was home to Huldrich Zwingli, a contemporary of Luther and Calvin, leading the call for Reformation. Zwingli served as pastor of the Grossmunster (Great Church) in the 1520’s. Zwingli died in Zurich in 1531, and the Zurich Bible was published that same year. Two other churches here deserve attention. The Fraumunster (Our Lady's Church) has portions of architecture dating to the 13th century, and boasts stained glass windows by Marc Chagall. Finally St. Peter's Church has the largest church clock face in the world. Return to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 4 Konstanz, St. Gallen and Liechtenstein

This morning, travel to the lakeside city of Konstanz (Constance). In 1414 - 1418, the Council of Constance challenged early reformers of the church. Jan Hus, a Czech priest and early reformer was called before the council and later burned at the stake on July 6, 1415. Visit the house he stayed at here. Wander the medieval streets and shops of this city untouched by World War II. Continue to St. Gallen, where Mayor Joachim von Watt introduced the Reformation movement to the city in 1526. The town converted, but the Roman Catholic Abbey remained. Visit the Abbey of St. Gallen, whose library is one of the richest medieval libraries in the world. Over 2,000 of the 160,000 books are hand scribed, with 400 being over 1,000 years old. This afternoon, visit the postage stamp sized country of Liechtenstein, bordered by Switzerland and Austria. Not as urbanized as other countries its size, here you can step back in time and enjoy the Old World charm of its people and places. Return to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 5 Basel and Lucerne

Journey to Basel, located on the Rhine River and home to John Calvin. Visit the Munster, once a Catholic cathedral and now a Reformed church. Buried here is Erasmus, a Catholic priest and contemporary of the Reformers. His work on Free Will and toleration of opposing views of Christianity caused him to be criticized from both sides. He died in 1536 and was buried here. Oecolampadius led the city’s conversion to Protestantism, and John Calvin's work, “Institutes of the Christian Religion”, was first published here in 1536. Visit the Marketplatz and see the Rathaus (originally a Renaissance palace). Continue to beautiful Lucerne where you will arrive as a stranger and leave as a friend. The 14th century city wall, boasting nine different watchtowers, is one of the best preserved and longest fortifications in Europe. The colorful painted panels of Lucerne’s famous wooden Kappel Bridge depict the city’s history. See the twin towered Jesuit Church, which is one of the most handsome baroque buildings in Switzerland. For comparison, visit the Hofkirche, built in the Renaissance style, and the Franciscan Church, which was built in the high Gothic style. We will also view the sad and famous Lion Monument of Lucerne, which Mark Twain called the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world. Carved out of a sheer sandstone cliff, it depicts a dying lion with its chin sagging on its shield. Check into your hotel in the Lucerne area for dinner and overnight.

Day 6 Interlaken and the Alps

This morning travel to Interlaken, the heart of Switzerland. Flower-lined streets and the surrounding mountains will be familiar postcard images to you. Also familiar will be the towering nearby peaks of the Jungfrau, Eiger and Monch. Enjoy free time to wander shop and explore this town between two lakes. Travel across incredible Swiss mountain ranges, catch glimpses of glaciers and travel through breathtaking mountains. Then continue on to Villars-sur-Olllon to check into your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 7 Chillon and Lausanne

Journey south today to the seaside village of Chillon. At the castle here, Francois Bonivard was imprisoned from 1530 –- 1536. Lord Byron wrote the poem “The Prisoner of Chillon” in his honor. The castle overlooks Lake Leman, and dates back to the 12th century. From here, continue to Lausanne for free time to wander, explore and shop in the Old Town. Those ready for a climb can walk the stairs of the Cathedral Tower for a bird’s eye view of the city. Return to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 8 Geneva

Today explore the places and history of Geneva. John Calvin slept here one night in 1536 on his way to exile, and then returned to assist in bringing the Reformation here, and with it, a theocratic form of government. Visit the Reformation Museum, home to artifacts and manuscripts from this epic period in church history. The Cathedral Saint Peter next door is rich in Early Christian and Reformed church history as well. Also visit the Reformation Monument, including the Pilgrim Roger Williams and drive past the UN Palace and the Council of Churches, both headquartered here. Enjoy time to walk around the city to see such places as the flower wall clock and the Jet d’Eau, shooting water over 400 feet into the air. Check into your Geneva area hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 9 Return to USA

Return home with memories of the people and places of the Reformation in Switzerland.
