Day 1 Jan. 6 – Depart USA
Depart on your international overnight flight.
Day 2 Jan. 7 – Arrive in Israel / Transfer to Galilee Kibbutz / dinner and overnight – Welcome Gathering
Arrive in Tel Aviv and transfer to your accommodations at a kibbutz in the Galilee area. Enjoy a welcome meeting with local members of the kibbutz - conversation on kibbutz life and an Israeli perspectiveon the conflict.
Day 3 Jan. 8 – Northern Israel – Golan Heights / Mount Bental / Tel Dan/ Metulla – Evening lecture on History and the Power of Memory
This morning you will pass through the Golan Heights and gain a better appreciation of their strategic importance. Look out fromMount Bental over the valley that leads to Damascus. Saul would have his life-transforming vision on his way there (Acts 9). Continue northward to Tel Dan. Walk the ancient remains of Tel Dan and see where the altar built by King Jeroboam I once stood (I Kings 12). Pass through Metulla, home to the “Good Fence” and Nahal Ayyan Bridge. Bought by Baron de Rothschild in the late 1800’s for Jewish immigration to return to Israel, it now sits on the border of Lebanon and Israel. Return to your kibbutz for dinner and an evening lecture on History and the Power of Memory.
Day 4 Jan. 9 – Galilee sites / Jordan Valley / Jericho – Evening lecture on “From Extremism to Inclusion.” - Overnight in Jericho
Today you will spend around the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus invested the majority of his ministry. Worship as you sail across the Sea of Galilee. Visit Capernaum, center of Jesus’ ministry in the Galilee, andvisit the synagogue built on the site where Jesus taught (Matthew 4). On the Mount of Beatitudes, contemplate the “Sermon on the Mount” (Matthew 5-7). Visit Magdala and the recent excavations of the First Century Synagogue there - this was the home town of Mary Magdalene. Then pass through the Jordan Valley on your way to your hotel in Jericho for dinner and a lecture on “From Extremism to Inclusion.”
Day 5 Jan. 10 – Masada / Dead Sea / Bedouin Experience – Overnight in Bethlehem - Possible Dinner with local Arab Christian Families
Begin this morning in Jericho, to view the ruins of the city conquered by Joshua (Joshua 6). In the distance you can also see the traditional site of the Temptation of Jesus (Matthew 4). Walk the ruins ofQumran, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in 1947. Continue south to visit Masada, the spectacular mountaintop fortress built by Herod that is famous for being the last stronghold of the Jewish rebellion against the Romans. From the top of Masada, the Roman camps and siege ramp can still be seen. Then pass throughthe Judean Wilderness and stop at a Bedouin Experience, before checking in to your hotel in Bethlehem. The option to experience dinner with a local Arab Christian family will be available.
Day 6 Jan. 11 – Bethlehem sites / – Lecture on Palestinian Issues – Political, Socioeconomic, and Territory
Walk to the traditional birthplace of Jesus in the Church of the Nativity. Travel to Ramallah for a lecture at the Arab American University, then visit the Palestinian history museum and thePalestinian art museum.
Day 7 Jan. 12 – Jewish Jerusalem sites – Western Wall, City of David, Yad Vashem - Q and A with Christian, Palestinian and Jewish local representatives
Begin your time in Jerusalem at the Western Wall, the last remnant of the Second Temple Period, available for Jews to pray. Wander through the excavations of the City of David. Walk the steps tothe Pool of Siloam, recently uncovered at the foot of the City. After lunch, travel to Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Memorial, as a reminder of what the hatred of any people can become. Tonight will be a presentation of Christian, Palestinian Muslim and Jewish local representatives for a time of interaction and questions from you.
Day 8 Jan. 13 – Christian Jerusalem Sites – Mount of Olives, Via Dolorosa, Garden Tomb / Free Evening
Stand atop the Mount of Olives as Jesus did and enjoy a remarkable view of the “Golden City” of Jerusalem. Forty days after His resurrection, Jesus ascended into heaven from the Mount of Olives (Acts 1). Walk the Palm Sunday Road, down the Mount of Olives. Stop en route at Dominus Flevit Church, a great view of the city, built in commemoration of Jesus weeping over Jerusalem (Luke 19). Pray in the Garden of Gethsemane (Matthew 26). Viewthe Pool of Bethesda where Jesus performed the Sabbath miracle (John 5). Visit Herod’s Antonia Fortress, where Jesus appeared before Pontius Pilate (Luke 23), and follow in Christ’s steps on theVia Dolorosa (“the Way of the Cross”). At the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, take time to reflect on His sacrificial love. Prepare for your return flights.
Day 9 Jan. 14 – Return to USA
Return home with an understanding of the people and places of the Holy Land, and how their continuing struggles to live in peace and reconciliation merit our prayers, and can inspire us in our personal Christian walk.
