Day 1 Depart USA
Your journey begins when you depart the USA on your overnight flight.
Day 2 Arrival
Welcome to South Africa! On arrival in Capetown, you will be transferred to your hotel for a welcome gathering, dinner and overnight.
Day 3 Robben Island
Take a ferry to Robben Island, the infamous island in Cape Bay that over the centuries has housed a military base, leper colony, mental institution, hospital and prison. The prison is now most famous for imprisoning Nelson Mandela who was held there for 18 years, sealing the island’s place in the history of South Africa and the world. This evening, attend a lecture on Nelson Mandela and other Apartheid leaders and their various philosophies for dissent. Return to your hotel for dinner & overnight.
Day 4 Cape Town City Tour
Today enjoy a city tour of Capetown including City Hall, the Victoria and Albert Waterfront & downtown. This evening attend a lecture on the history of South Africa and its various indigenous and colonial periods and how they led to Apartheid. Return to your hotel for dinner & overnight.
Day 5 Cape Town Mountains & Beaches
Today explore the adventurous and outdoor side of Cape Town. Your first stop will be the iconic flat topped Table Mountain where you can take in breathtaking views of the bay & nearby Signal Hill, which is also known as the “Lion’s Rump”. Take some time to enjoy the beaches and free time to explore.
Day 6 Johannesburg: Apartheid
This morning fly to Johannesburg and visit the Apartheid Museum. Attend a Q and A session with African leaders about the issues that still remain as the nation continues to recover from Apartheid. Check into your Johannesburg hotel for dinner & overnight.
Day 7 Johannesburg: Nelson Mandela & His Legacy
Today dive further into the history of “Madiba” at the Mandela House, where the Mandela family lived from 1946 into the 1990’s. Visit the nearby Hector Pieterson Museum in honor of the 13 year old Hector who died during the 1976 student uprising against Apartheid. This afternoon tour Soweto, which is referred by some as “a symbol of the New South Africa, caught between old squatter misery and new prosperity, squalor and an upbeat lifestyle, it’s a vibrant city which still bears the scars of the Apartheid past and yet shows what’s possible in the New South Africa”. This evening’s lecture is on Mandela’s Rule and South Africa’s transition from Apartheid.
Day 8 Pilanesberg Safari
Transfer to Pilanesberg National Park & enjoy lunch and then afternoon game drive through the park. Keep your eyes out for the Big Five! (Elephant, Rhino, Lion, Cheetah, Water Buffalo). Check into your hotel for dinner & overnight.
Day 9 Pilanesberg Safari & Final Gathering
Enjoy a morning game drive through the park to see more of the wild beauty of South Africa as the animals rise to begin their day. After lunch transfer to Johannesburg. Come together for a final lecture & conversation on how you can apply the lessons learned when you return home.
Day 10 Depart South Africa
Transfer to the airport for your return flights.
Day 11 Return to USA or extension
